A red and rusty ship floats silently in the ocean. Shipwrecks are the stuff of legend; kids all over the world dream of finding sunken treasure from the Spanish Armada or a long lost pirate ship. Personally, I always wonder who the men and women on those old boats were and the mysteries they brought with them to the grave. Everyone has their own story and I always imagine that sea folk must be some of the most interesting with stories of sea monsters, krakens, and mermaids abound.
The Fish Out of Water series began with a trip to Iceland. I was only in the country for a 24 hour layover but I got to explore the vibrant city of Reykjavik with its culinary delights, quirky mural scene and of course its rugged beauty. I have always had a love of the ocean and I stopped to take a few photographs of the big ocean going vessels getting fresh coats of paint in the dry docks and it was there that I came up with a new series of work - Fish Out of Water!
